Sam Francis was born in San Mateo, California, in 1923. He began painting at the age of twenty while recovering from a serious spinal injury sustained during military service — an experience that turned him decisively toward art. He spent much of the 1950s in Paris, where he became associated with the lyrical abstraction movement and developed the luminous, colour-saturated style that would define his career. From Paris he made frequent journeys to Europe, South America, and Asia, and maintained a deep and lifelong connection with Japan, where he exhibited widely and was greatly admired.
