Guan Wei was born in Beijing, China in 1957. He studied at the Nanjing Normal University before moving to Australia in 1989 following the Tiananmen Square protests, settling in Sydney where he has lived and worked ever since. One of the most distinctive and widely exhibited contemporary artists working in Australia, he occupies a unique cultural position — drawing on both his Chinese artistic heritage and his experience as an immigrant navigating a new country, weaving the two together into a visual language that is simultaneously playful, politically sharp, and deeply personal.
