Mario Dalpra was born in Trento, Italy in 1949. A painter and printmaker of deeply spiritual and philosophical sensibility, he works within a figurative tradition that draws on the great currents of European art history — Renaissance luminosity, Romantic landscape, and Symbolist allegory — while speaking in an entirely contemporary voice. His work is concerned with the inner life: with transformation, spiritual journey, and the human struggle between darkness and light.
Dalpra studied and worked in Italy before establishing himself as a significant figure in the European figurative painting scene. His canvases are characterised by atmospheric depth, a masterful handling of light, and a consistent preoccupation with the solitary human figure moving through vast, often ambiguous spaces — landscapes that feel simultaneously real and visionary.
His series of five prints — Breaking into the Light (1993), The Wanderer, One Last View, The Darkness (1993), and My Spirit — were produced in collaboration with Fred Genis in Sydney, placing them among the Australian chapter of Fred’s career despite their European artistic origins. The titles alone speak directly to Dalpra’s enduring themes — a soul moving through darkness toward light, a wanderer seeking meaning, a final reckoning with the visible world before passing into the invisible. Together the five works form a coherent spiritual narrative, a sequence that rewards being read as a whole rather than as individual prints.
That these deeply European works were realised in a Sydney studio speaks to the reach of Fred Genis’s reputation and the breadth of his international connections even in his later years.
Mario Dalpra continues to live and work in Italy. His work is held in public and private collections across Europe.
