Robert Jacks was born in Melbourne in 1943. A painter, printmaker, photographer, and poet of quiet but persistent originality, he spent extended periods living and working in the United States and Canada before returning to Australia, where he became an important if somewhat independent presence in the contemporary art scene. His work resists easy categorisation — moving between minimalism, conceptual art, and a deeply personal lyricism that gives even his most spare compositions a warm, breathing quality.
