John Cage was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1912. A composer, writer, and printmaker, he studied composition, harmony, and counterpoint with Buhlig, Weiss, Schoenberg, and Cowell, before becoming a catalyst in the worlds of music, art, literature, and performance. From 1944 to 1968 he was musical director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in New York, and his influence spread far beyond music, touching visual art, literature, and philosophy in equal measure.
