Maarten van Dreven was born in the Netherlands and originally trained as a fashion designer before turning his focus to art in 1972. He was the life partner of fellow artist Jurjen de Haan, and the two worked closely together, both finding their way to Fred Genis’s workshop at Oudkerk in Friesland during the 1970s. Van Dreven preferred working in large format, and his background in fashion remained a constant presence in his art — his meticulously rendered drawings of masks, underwear, and sportswear carry a frank homoerotic charge that is entirely deliberate and entirely Dutch in its directness.
