Colin Lanceley was born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1938, moving to Australia as a child. One of the most inventive and wide-ranging artists of his generation, he studied at East Sydney Technical College before travelling extensively in Europe, where he absorbed the full breadth of the Western tradition — from medieval tapestry to Surrealism — and wove it into a practice that was exuberantly, distinctively his own. His work combines painting, collage, assemblage, and printmaking with a restless creative energy and a deep love of music, poetry, and the natural world.
