Patsy Payne was born in Hammersmith, London in 1955. A close personal friend of the Genis family, she moved to Australia and built a practice of remarkable range — drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and tapestry weaving — underpinned by an equally wide-ranging intellectual curiosity. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and Archaeology from the University of Sydney in 1976, a Postgraduate Diploma in Visual Arts from Sydney College of the Arts in 1983, and later a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies from the Australian National University in 2005. Few artists can claim such a breadth of formal study, and it shows in the layered intelligence of her work.
