John Firth-Smith was born in Birmingham, England in 1943, moving to Australia in the 1960s where he became one of the most significant and original abstract painters of his generation. Settling in Sydney, he developed a practice rooted in the Australian coastal landscape — the ocean, light, and the particular quality of the Pacific horizon — translated into large, luminous abstractions of extraordinary spatial freedom and lyrical intelligence. His canvases breathe; they carry the feeling of water, wind, and open sky without ever depicting them literally.
