Hal Missingham was born in Hastings, England in 1906 and came to Australia as a young man, becoming one of the most influential figures in Australian cultural life across the middle decades of the twentieth century. A painter, draughtsman, and administrator of considerable ability, he served as Director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 1945 to 1971 — a tenure of twenty-six years during which he shaped the gallery’s collection, its public profile, and its relationship with Australian artists in ways that are still felt today. He was also a gifted cartoonist and writer, bringing the same wit and directness to words that he brought to images.
