The American Years
In 1965 Fred went to Los Angeles, where he joined Ken Tyler’s newly formed Gemini Ltd lithographic workshop as a printer. The following year he received a fellowship from Tamarind in Los Angeles. In June 1967 he became Master Printer at Universal Limited Art Editions in New York — the celebrated workshop run by Tatyana Grosman — where he worked with Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist, Larry Rivers, and Lee Bontecou, among others. In 1969 he became a partner of Irwin Hollander, and the workshop became Hollanders Workshop. During this period he printed with Willem de Kooning, James Rosenquist, and John Cage.
Hollanders Workshop, New York (1969–1974)
One of the most innovative print workshops in the United States, Hollanders operated from the Lower East Side of Manhattan under master printer Fred Genis and business manager Irwin Hollander, with assistant Jim Sheehy. Its single-artist philosophy and informal atmosphere attracted a remarkable generation of American artists — many making their first prints here.
The Hollanders Workshop Collection resides as a permanent collection at the Limerick City Gallery of Art, Ireland. We gratefully acknowledge the contribution of Jim Sheehy, Cork, in preserving this history (Link to video Jim Sheehy talking to Fred Genis’ middle daughter Lois Genis).
