Max Gimblett was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1935. After training and working in Australia during the 1960s, he moved to New York in 1970, where he has lived and worked ever since, becoming an American citizen and an important presence in the New York art world. A painter, printmaker, and calligrapher of deep spiritual conviction, Gimblett draws on an extraordinarily wide range of influences — Zen Buddhism, Sufism, alchemy, the work of Abstract Expressionists, and the meditative traditions of East Asian brushwork — weaving them into a practice that is at once visually immediate and philosophically rich.
