Brett Whiteley was born in Sydney in 1939. One of the most celebrated and charismatic figures in Australian art history, he burst onto the international scene in the early 1960s and never left it, producing a body of work of extraordinary energy and sensual richness across painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. His art drew on a wide range of influences — from the European figurative tradition to Japanese calligraphy, from the Sydney Harbour he loved obsessively to the darker territories of addiction and desire — and synthesised them into a style that was instantly and unmistakably his own.
